After your appointment

Tattoo aftercare

Heal clean · Heal smart · Heal beautifully.

Your tattoo’s going to look like it’s going through something for a few days.

It is.

Dryness, peeling, itching, flaking, a little mild scabbing, some temporary dullness while it heals. All normal. Aftercare is what takes your tattoo from “currently a mess” to clean, settled, and aging well.

Be patient. Stop googling “is my tattoo ruined”at 2 a.m. Follow the instructions below and you’ll be fine.

Second Skin / Adhesive bandage

Second Skin is a breathable adhesive bandage that sits over your fresh tattoo for the first few days. It keeps out bacteria, blocks friction from your clothes, and lets the tattoo heal in a cleaner environment. It’s how most of my clients heal.

What it does

  • Cleaner healing
  • Less friction from clothes
  • Less scabbing
  • More protection through the first vulnerable days
Sensitive skin
Some people react to the adhesive itself with redness, itching, or irritation. If that’s you, take it off early (see below) and switch to daily healing care.

Keep it on for 2–5 days if

  • The seal is still intact
  • The tattoo is fully covered
  • No fluid is leaking
  • It feels comfortable
  • No severe irritation

Take it off sooner if

  • Any part of the tattoo is exposed
  • The edges lift or the seal breaks
  • Fluid is leaking from the bandage
  • You get a lot of redness, itching, or burning
  • A rash develops

If the bandage falls off, lifts at the edges, or stops covering the tattoo fully, take it off completely and move to Section 2: Daily healing care.

How to take it off

Take it off under warm running water. Peel it away slowly while keeping the skin wet. Don’t rip it off dry. Then move to Section 2.

Traditional wrap (Saran wrap / cling film)

Saran wrap goes over your tattoo right after the appointment as a short-term cover. I use it when adhesive bandages aren’t an option: sensitive skin, adhesive allergies, or you just don’t want one.

Important
Saran wrap doesn’t breathe. It’s a 1–3 hour cover, not a healing bandage. Take it off within 3 hours and move to Section 2.

Daily healing care

Cleaning

Wash your tattoo 2–3 times a day with:

  • Lukewarm water
  • Clean hands
  • Mild, fragrance-free soap

Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Don’t scrub, scratch, or rub it.

Recommended soaps

  • Dial Gold (fragrance-free preferred)
  • Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
  • Dr. Bronner's Unscented
  • Dove Sensitive Skin (fragrance-free)

Moisturizing

A thin layer of fragrance-free lotion, 2–3 times a day.

Your tattoo should feel lightly hydrated. Not greasy, not shiny. If it looks wet, you used too much.

Less is better.

Over-moisturizing slows healing and irritates the skin.

Recommended moisturizers

  • Lubriderm (Fragrance-Free)
  • CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion
  • Aveeno Fragrance-Free
  • Hustle Butter
  • Aquaphor (very thin layer only during early healing if needed)

Avoid using

  • Heavily fragranced lotions
  • Alcohol-based products
  • Thick greasy ointments
  • Exfoliants
  • Harsh skincare products
  • Random internet healing trends or DIY remedies

What is normal during healing?

  • Itching
  • Peeling
  • Flaking
  • Mild scabbing
  • Dryness
  • Slight tenderness
  • Temporary cloudiness or dullness

A healing tattoo doesn’t always look pretty before it settles in.

Trust the process.

04

Healing environment & what to avoid

Fresh tattoos are vulnerable for the first couple weeks. Stay away from:

  • Pet hair
  • Dirty blankets
  • Unsanitary surfaces
  • Excessive touching
  • Pools
  • Hot tubs
  • Lakes
  • Oceans
  • Saunas
  • Soaking the tattoo
  • Tanning
  • Direct sunlight
  • Excessive sweating
  • Intense workouts during early healing
  • Heavy friction
  • Tight clothing rubbing the tattoo
  • Scratching, picking, or peeling

Always wash your hands before touching your tattoo.

05

Healing timeframe

Most tattoos look surface-healed in 2–4 weeks.

The deeper layers take longer to settle, depending on:

  • Placement
  • Skin type
  • Lifestyle
  • Overall health
  • Aftercare consistency
06

Long-term care

Once it’s fully healed, wear sunscreen on it every day.

Sun is what fades tattoos the fastest. Keeping the area covered or SPF’d is the difference between sharp lines a decade in and a faded blob.

Protect your investment.

Questions or concerns?

If anything feels off, looks weird, or has you spiraling, message me.

A healing tattoo goes through a lot of strange-looking stages before it settles. Ask me before you stress yourself out, or worse, follow random internet advice that usually makes things worse.

Healing is personal. Trust the process.
